The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
Leading scientific institutions and governments are increasingly investing in EGS and SuperHot Geothermal as a promising source of clean, reliable and scalable energy. Stanford University has published research highlighting the significant potential of advanced geothermal systems, while the U.S. Department of Energy actively supports the sector through programmes such as ARPA-E's SUPERHOT programme, launched in 2025 with $30 million dedicated to technologies capable of accessing geothermal resources above 375°C and 22 MPa.
The Europen Union (EU) - Horizon Europe
In Europe, the EU is pursuing the same frontier through Horizon Europe, funding advanced research and demonstration projects aimed at unlocking deep and superhot geothermal resources. The recently launched SHiFT project, for example, receives almost €10 million in EU funding to demonstrate sustainable power generation from geothermal resources above 400°C, integrating advanced drilling, well completion, flow testing and power-conversion technologies.
The scale of this scientific and governmental commitment demonstrates that advanced geothermal is increasingly regarded as a potentially important pillar of the future energy system.
