Can Geothermal Energy Get Depleted?
In Short
- Unlike fossil fuels, Ultra-Deep Geothermal Energy cannot be depleted on human timescales.
- The Earth contains an immense and continuously replenished thermal reservoir, extending thousands of kilometres beneath our feet.
- We extract only a tiny fraction of the planet’s vast natural heat flow, far less than the energy the Earth continuously releases into space.
- For all practical purposes, Ultra-Deep Geothermal Energy is an inexhaustible source of clean, reliable energy.
An Inexhaustible Energy Source
One of the most frequently asked questions we get is: if we extract - on a large global scale - heat from the Earth, will the Earth eventually cool down and/or will it be depleted?
The short answer is: No!
Even at global scale, Ultra-Deep Geothermal Energy represents only a tiny fraction of the Earth's natural heat budget. We barely scratch the surface. A typical ultra-deep geothermal well reaches depths of approximately 16 km. The Earth's core lies roughly 5,500 to more than 6,000 km below the surface. That means an ultra-deep well penetrates less than 0.3% of the distance to the Earth's core.
We are operating extremely close to the surface compared to the enormous thermal
reservoir contained within our planet.
A Heat Source Beyond Human Timescales
The Earth's core reaches temperatures between 5,000°C and 6,000°C. Compared to
this immense energy reservoir, extracting geothermal energy is comparable to a
mosquito taking a sip from the ocean. The available thermal energy exceeds human
energy demand by many orders of magnitude. For all practical purposes, this energy
source can be considered inexhaustible on human timescales.
The Earth Already Releases Vast Amounts of Heat
The Earth continuously emits geothermal heat into space. Every year, the planet
naturally releases more than twice the amount of energy humanity consumes globally.
Most of that energy simply dissipates into the atmosphere and space.
Ultra-Deep Geothermal Energy captures only a very small portion of this ongoing natural
heat flow and converts it into productive energy. Instead of wasting it.

Constantly Recharged from Within
The Earth's internal heat is not a finite battery. A significant part of the geothermal heat budget is continuously regenerated by the natural radioactive decay of mainly 3 elements as pictured above.
